Beverly Donofrio, Author

It was a blast to interview my friend of 45+ years, who is now a 'girl made good' from our hometown of Wallingford. Bev's first book, Riding In Cars With Boys, was made into a movie starring Drew Barrymore and was translated into 15 languages.  Many wonderful books and articles have followed.  Look for book about her spiritual quest, ASTONISHED, due out in early March.  Her interview on WPAA-TV will also be aired around that time.  www.wpaa.tv.

CT Womens Alliance

Wendy Leahy, President of the CT Women's Alliance, was interviewed on my new public TV show, "Mid LIFE Matters."  Wendy spoke passionately about this non-profit group's commitment to empowering and educating women.  We had a lively half-hour discussion, and ended the evening at Jake's, a Wallingford pub with a live piano player.  Check out CWA's annual conference on their site,  www.ctwomensalliance.com.  It is on April 25, 2013 in central Connecticut.  Thank You, Wendy, for being a great guest, and kudos to Susan, The Volunteer Executive Director of WPAA TV, and her talented staff.

 Sorrow

"God keep my jewel this day from danger.  From tinker and pooka and black-hearted stranger..."  I framed a copy of this Irish prayer when my daughter was born, and it took on special meaning when her life was endangered.  I howl for the 20 parents who lost their most precious gifts in Newtown, and for the entire community.

"Don't compromise yourself.  It's all you've got " Janis Joplin

Women who leave secure jobs and leap into entrepreneurial waters are, in effect, marrying themselves.  They are divorcing 'The Man" to lead less compromised lives.  They make new vows.

Reflecting on nearly 20 years of entrepreneurial life, I feel richer in that my world expanded twenty fold.  Poorer, in that my safety net is gone -- so I don't look down.

I've guided family members through sickness, without having to beg for time off.  My health has remained strong; fate and luck.

                                                                       *******

Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estes, in Women Who Run With the Wolves, reinterprets fairy tales that every entrepreneurial woman should heed.  Resist shiny red shoes; they are rescue fantasies -- Better to rely on your own creations.  Ugly ducklings can freeze to death in isolation; find your pack.  Like Bluebeard's bride, dare to unluck the forbidden door .

Running your own show requires a belief in something outside yourself; your north star beckons.  But who will help you bake the bread?  Others will step forward, but ultimately, you are all you've got.

We don't get do-overs in life, but what advice comes from our experiences?  To my 25-yr. old daughter, who eschewed a brief corporate life for starting her own horse magazine, I said "Do this if you must.  There is no greater joy than running your own show.  Marry yourself."
