Labor Laws 101

Hello, hospitals, restaurants, warehouses, and other employers with shift workers. Employees are entitled to take bathroom breaks, drink water, and be paid for hours worked. Sounds simple enough, but stories are surfacing where nurses and servers are pressured to finish their work 'off the clock', and are put at risk of dehydration during shifts. This is happening even within Corporate chains, which presumably have legal counsel at their elbows.
A NYT article "At an Upscale Restaurant, Claims of Underpaying Workers" alleges a great disparity between how high-paying guests and low-paid employees are treated (by Jennifer Median, 7/21/13). Both deserve respect. As an HR Crone, I am disheartened that the new economy seems to have eroded a century's worth of federal and state labor laws.
